He was 77 years old at the time of his death. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, on his birthday at the Pioneer Cemetery in Graham.
He was born to J.D. Adkins Sr. and Atcie Guthrie Adkins. He served in World War II for 3 1/2 years in Germany. He was a photographer for 40 years, a Baptist and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8567.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Marcella Turner of Graham and Margie Winkles of Mineral Wells.
Survivors include his companion of more than 20 years, Veta Wells of Proffitt; two sons, Jimmy D. Adkins III and wife of Midland and Steve Howell and wife Belinda of Wimberly; a daughter, Shannon Kelly Boswell and husband Adam of Belfair, Wash.; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; two step-grandchildren; and several cousins.
