Paula Jo Sutherland Ailport, 71, of Havre, passed away Easter morning, April 16, 2006 at her home in Havre of natural causes. She was born in Hamilton on May 20, 1934 to Joe and Ruby Sutherland.
Her childhood was spent at the family farm on Sutherland Road northeast of Corvallis. Paula attended school at Corvallis where she was a cheerleader and she graduated from Hamilton High School in 1952.
Paula attended Montana State University in Bozeman and the University of Montana in Missoula where she studied art. She had a natural talent for painting and enjoyed painting wildlife.
On October 10, 1954 she married Arthur Ailport, a Korean War veteran from Clinton. He preceded her in death in 1981. They had four sons; Rock, of Havre/Clinton, Rick "RJ" and wife Kaye, of Miles City, Paul and wife Delfinia, of Polson, and Shane and wife Jill, of Glenrock, Wy.; grandchildren Josh, Justin, Mandy Jo, Brandon, Joseph, Matthew, Eva, Dustin, Tyrel and Travis, and great-granddaughter Jocelyn.
Paula's classmates and family will remember her good looks and mischievous character. She had a quick wit and uncanny ability to know what you were thinking.
Paula ran a store at Intake on the Yellowstone River for several years where paddle fish are found and was a home health aid.
Her life work was raising her sons. She enjoyed teaching them about the geography and geology of the places they lived which included; Lolo; Salmon, Idaho; Kooski, Idaho; Williston, N.D.; Glendive and Miles City.
She was proud of their successful careers and her grandchildren. Paula was well read on political and religious topics. She was an early riser and enjoyed a good cup of coffee.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father; Ruby and Joe Sutherland, her husband, Art, sister Patsy Smith and an infant grandchild. She is survived by her sons Rock, Rick, Paul and Shane; seven grandsons, two granddaughters, and one great-granddaughter; sister Donna Copeland, of Corvallis, brother-in-law Ralph Smith, of Corvallis, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m., Saturday at the Daly-Leach Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 22 at the Daly-Leach Chapel in Hamilton. Interment will follow at the Corvallis Cemetery. The family suggests that memorials be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
