Caroline MITCHELL BABBITT was born near Hermon, Illinois, April 26, 1856 and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Leo. O'Donnell, February 2, 1929.
Caroline MITCHELL was the oldest child of Robert A. and Sarah J. MITCHELL. At an early age she moved with her parents to the old MITCHELL home, near Pleasant Ridge, and there she received her education and grew to womanhood. On October 2, 1871, she was united in marriage to George W. BABBITT of Pleasant Ridge. They resided in this community for nearly 48 years and on March 8, 1920, Mr. BABBITT passed away. To this union where born nine children, the eldest was Mrs. Maude YOUNG, who passed away some eighteen years ago, three died in infancy. Those surviving are Mrs. Daisy SMITH, St. Augustine; Kenneth R., Avon; Mrs. Lena SWARTZ, Hermon; Mrs. Jessie JOHN, Montana; and Mrs. Flossey O'DONNELL, Avon. There are ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren also three sisters and six brothers, namely: Mrs. Elizabeth ARINGDALE, Mrs. Emma NEFF of Avon, Mrs. Mary STEPHENSON of Beardstown, Olive, George, Douglas and Robert of Avon, Henry of Abingdon and Silas Deceased.
In 1883, she and her husband, made a confession of their faith in Christ, they were baptized and received into the membership of the Christian church of St. Augustine. This has since been her church faith and home.
For several months she has been failing in health and for the past week she has suffered intensely from complications, though she was very patient through all her illness. She was given the greatest of care, but very little relief came until the end.
Thus another of the fast thinning ranks of our elder members has answered the summons. She will be greatly missed by her remaining family, and the large circle of relatives and dear friends.
"Gone from us --- yes gone Yet again we home to meet thee--- When the day of life is fled, and in Heaven with joy to greet thee where no farewell tears are shed."
Funeral services where held from the Christian church in St. Augustine, Tuesday, at l:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. A. K. Adcock of Abingdon. Cutler, The Flower girls were Misses Geraldine Vermillion, and Ruth Davis. The casket bearers were nephews of the deceased namely, Glenn MILLS, Verne EFFLAND, Earl MITCHELL, Willis MITCHELL, Julian MITCHLEL, and Lloyd ARINGDALE.
The esteem in which Mrs. BABBITT was held was fully attested by the many beautiful floral tributes from relatives and friends.
