Born into a California pioneer family, she was raised in Placerville in the Sierra Nevada foothills. In 1942 "Berta" enlisted in the Women's Army Corp and served in the European Theater where she obtained the rank of Master Sergeant and helped coordinate military transportation for all of Europe at the end of the war.
Discharged from military service in San Francisco in 1946, Berta married John B. Averett of Louisiana in 1947. Following the birth of their son, John Charles, in 1948, John B. returned to the Air Force as a reserve officer during the Korean War and continued his service until retirement as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1967. Their "Military Life" included duty stations in Washington, California, London, Michigan, Frankfurt, and Virginia.
Returning to Northern California upon retirement, John and Berta were long time residents of San Rafael. Berta moved to Houston in 2000 following the death of her husband of 52 years.
Berta was a homemaker, a devoted mother and grandmother, a gracious hostess and an avid reader and gardner. She was a good friend to all who knew her, open, courteous and caring with everyone she met.
Berta, the daughter of Nellie Evans McCumsey and Herbert Peter Thomsen, was preceded in death by her two brothers, William Thomsen of the Philippines and Donald "Scooter" Thomsen of Washington. She is survived by her sister, Edith Grebmeier of King City, California, her son and his wife John and Lynne Averett of Houston, Texas and by her granddaughter Dr. Lauren Averett Byers and her husband William A.
