Howard worked in transportation with the Railroad and was Yard Master at Metz, France when he was killed. The story, as told by one of his buddies, was that the Germans had bombed Metz and they thought all the bombers were gone. Howard gave the orders, "Let's go back to work, boys". Howard was the first one out. They started out of the shelter. About that time, a stray bomber came over. They all headed back for shelter. Some of them made it back, but Howard didn't and was killed by the bomb dropped by that last bomber. Aunt Effie and Uncle Bill had his body brought back to Missouri after the war was over and he is buried in Cave Springs Cemetery near Alton, Oregon County, MO, beside his father and mother's graves.
