James Robert Bobby Appleby, 77, died at his home in Estill on Wednesday, October 8, 2008. Funeral services will be graveside at Lawtonville Cemetery near Estill at 2:00 PM on Saturday, October 11, 2008; services will be conducted by Rev. Michael Lack and Dr. James Norris. Visitation will be on Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton. Born November 23, 1930, near Garnett, South Carolina, Mr. Appleby was a lifelong resident of Hampton County. He was a son of the late Elizabeth DeLoach Appleby and Clinton Giles Appleby, and was a member of Estill United Methodist Church. A graduate of Estill High School, he worked for twenty-seven years for J. F. Wyman, Inc. in agricultural management. For several years Mr. Appleby worked for Andrew Harper. At the time of his death, he had worked for seventeen years managing Williamswood Lodge near Garnett. Always civic minded, Mr. Appleby had served the Town of Estill for sixteen years, eight years as a Town Councilman and eight years as Mayor of Estill. He had also served as a volunteer Fireman in Estill for a number of years. Mr. Appleby was an avid sportsman and hunter. He loved the outdoors, and was a lover of all things in nature, especially in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. He is survived by his beloved wife of fifty-six years, Berniece Elizabeth (Betty) Solomons Appleby; one daughter, Catherine Appleby Storey and her husband, Wally, of Simpsonville, South Carolina; one granddaughter, Jennifer Claire Storey of Greenville; one grandson, James Wallace Storey of Greenville; two brothers, Clyde Appleby (Gayle) of Estill and Buddy Appleby (Sybil) of Hilton Head Island. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Bert and Giles Appleby, and one sister who lived to adulthood, Catherine Appleby Calloway.
