Maria Garcia was born in September 1951, in Ponce, Puerto Rico. She was the third child of her parents. Little is known about her, except that as an infant she was very sickly and frail. She was believed to have passed away from either walking pneumonia or an intestinal disorder. She is buried in a small makeshift family plot with her maternal grandparents on the island.
