Frederick came to Baltimore with his parents, Heinrich and Henrietta Bauer, who set up as florists on N. Gay Street. He bought property north of the city, on Bellona Avenue, and became a prosperous flower and plant grower as well as retailer. He was active in the floral business community and won many awards for his designs.
He married Wilhelmine Friederike "Minnie" Schwarz about 1894 at Jerusalem Ev. Lutheran Church on Belair Raod. They raised five children: William F. Bauer, Irvin O. Bauer, Harry F. Bauer, Thelma and Margaret. William, Irvin, and Harry all followed their father into the family business. "Flowers by Bauer" became a staple of northern Baltimore County social events.
