Daniel McIntosh, Sr. emigrated to the United States from Perthshire, Scotland where he was born around 1766 with his father, John, and family. He was 17 at the time and had already established a trade as a carpenter. It has been said that he hid his chest of tools in a sack of meal to avoid paying duty on them. Daniel supposedly helped build the first spiral staircase somewhere in New York. He married Jane McCalla on December 15, 1807 in Kentucky. Eight children were born to this union: William, John, James Harvey, Daniel Jr., Pricilla, Andrew, Lewis, and Rachael. Daniel preceded his wife in death.
