Three people, a man and his wife, a baby, are dead and two other people are in a serious condition as the result of a fire which destroyed the residence of Bevon Burns at Tatum shortly after nine O'clock Wednesday night. The fire was caused by the explosion of an oil can from which Burns was
pouring oil into a coal stove to relight the fire which he supposed had gone out while the family was away from home. The embers in the stove were still hot and the accumulated gas exploded completely enveloping the room in flames.
The fire was so fierce as to prevent any of the inmates to escape without serious burns and the two room building was completely destroyed. The three month old baby was burned
to death in the fire and both Mr. And Mrs. Burns were so seriously burned that they died during the night.Mrs. Burns and her daughter, two years old, were taken to Lubbock
for medical treatment, where Mrs.Burns died during the night. It was reported today that there is little
hope for the recovery of the little girl and that her death is expected At any time. Mrs. Odis Burns of Roswell, sister in law of Mr. Burns, was also rather seriously burned, but is not thought to be fatally injured.
The funeral services for the three victims of the fire were held at Tatum Thursday afternoon and the interment
was in the Tatum Cemetery. Mr. Burns was 24 years old and his wife was 20. They had moved to Tatum Only a few weeks ago from a farm a short distance east of that place.
