Death: Jul. 27, 2010

Washington, USA

Thomas Jacob Powell was born near Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada in the town of Goddard. His parents had immigrated from Leon, Kansas in 1909. In 1924 Tom's family immigrated to Salem, Oregon, where Tom's youngest brother was born in 1925. After the birth of Tom's youngest brother, his family moved to Sunnyside, Yakima County, WA. The 1934 death of Tom's father prompted a move to Seattle, WA in 1935. Tom's older brothers had purchased a boarding house located at 1422 Denny (near today's Group Health Hospital) to help their widowed mother support herself and their remaining siblings at home. Tom enjoyed life in the city and drove a 1929 Harley Motorcycle around the brick streets of Seattle. Tom graduated from Broadway High School in 1938 and was in the Army Signal Corps during WWII. After the war, Tom graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting and became licensed as a Certified Public Accountant. Tom married Marie Botts Smith on 17 August 1954 and they had two children. The family lived in the View Ridge area of Seattle, before moving to Edmonds, WA in 1962, where Tom opened a CPA office. Tom loved fishing and being on the water. Most of his homes in Edmonds featured incredible views of Puget Sound that were framed by the Olympic Mountains. Tom spoke with fondness of favorite view, which was the view he had from the bed of his home on Olympic View Drive...He shared how relaxing it was to be lulled to sleep while he gazed towards Olympic Peninsula's Point No Point Lighthouse. He loved watching each sweep of the beacon as it reached across the water of Puget Sound towards his home in Edmonds...

Tom requested that his ashes be scattered halfway between the Point No Point Lighthouse and the shores of Edmonds, WA. He said, "If my family wants to go someplace to remember me, all they have to do is to go to a beach in Edmonds and look across the sound towards the lighthouse beacon...that's where I'll be."
