Ellis Nathan Adamson was born in Hardin Co., Iowa as a result of previous generations of his family migrating westward from New Jersey to Pennsylvania to Ohio and finally to Iowa.
After his marriage to Levina, all of their children were born in Iowa with one exception: their third child, Everett Hiram, who was born in Colby, Kansas. Considering birth dates, this indicates that sometime between October of 1884 and September of 1891 Ellis and Levina left Iowa, relocated to Colby, Kansas, and then returned to Iowa – a span of approximately seven years. However, this was only the first of two times when they would relocate to Kansas from Iowa. According to the federal census of June 27, 1900, Ellis and Levina and all six of their children were still living in Fulton Township, Webster Co., Iowa, but on Ellis' death certificate it states that he had been a resident of Franklin Co., Kansas for thirty-nine years, strongly suggesting that sometime soon after the 1900 census Ellis and Levina and family relocated for the second time to Kansas. This second time they farmed 160 acres five miles northwest of Ottawa (Franklin Co.), Kansas until they retired sometime before Levina died on September 26, 1931, for at the time of her death they had moved from their farm to 623 S. Hickory St., Ottawa, Kansas – just a few blocks from their son Everett Hiram Adamson. One might assume they had retired as well.
There is human interest with the life of Ellis Adamson in a variety of ways. In a letter written by one of his grandsons Dean Allen Adamson to Dean's maternal lst cousin Amy (Hanks) Turner, Dean mentions that when he was six or seven years old, his "Grandfather Adamson" told him that he and Levina had come to Kansas in a covered wagon and that the only job he could get was "riding shotgun" as a guard on a stage coach. When the stage coach was frequently robbed, Ellis would drop his pocket watch down his boot because this was the only thing he owned of any value and also because the robbers never got the watch. (One has to wonder if he came in a covered wagon the first time he came to Kansas or the second time he came to Kansas. Both times are likely, considering the period of time.) Continued westward migration as well as the idea that the grass is always greener just across the road or just across the border in another state are very much a part of his life.
He is buried beside his wife in Highland Cemetery, Ottawa, Kansas.
