BREGANTE, FRED Fred Bregante passed away at home Thursday February 2, 2006 surrounded by his family. He had been a bright and energetic son, a good salesman, loving husband and father, a corny joke teller, a great dance partner, a gourmet cook and a kind, generous grandfather and great-grandfather. Never one to sit still, he was always fixing something, cooking something or making something in the workshop. Fred was born in Riva Tregoso, Italy on June 18th 1907. He was the third child out of 5 born to Anthony and Catherine Bregante. As did many in his generation Fred held a variety of jobs in his youth: bread delivery man, milkman, and cannery inspector but he spent a great deal of his life behind the counter of Bregante's Fish Market where he worked side by side with his brothers Anthony and Victor. He enjoyed working with the public and he believed in treating every customer with respect and interest no matter what size the order. Fred married Antoinette Zolezzi on November 1, 1931 and was married 52 years until her death in 1983. They had two daughters, Lorraine and Jeanette. Fred loved to woodwork and made many inlaid wood lamps and tables. He was an Elk for 50 years. He was also a gourmet cook who preached the virtues of "fresh food!" He was a believer in eating from the garden and avoiding frozen food. Fred was also a great dancer. After his wife died, Fred socialized by going to the dances at the Vasa and the Elks Club. He met the second love of his life, Sally at one of these dances. They traveled the world together and experienced genuine happiness until she passed away 5 years ago. Fred often joked about outliving everyone in his address book. Fred is survived by a sister Venus Weaver; his two daughters, son-in-law Paul Becker, his grandchildren Brenda Goodell and Donnie Becker, 5 great-grandchildren and his caregiver Lupe. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to San Diego Hospice Foundation, 4311 Third Avenue, San Diego or the Aseltine School. Visitation Tuesday, February 7 from 4-8 p.m. at Goodbody's Mortuary. A Rosary and Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, February 8 at 9 a.m. at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church at State and Date Streets. Interment will follow at Greenwood Memorial Park
