William Aschenbrenner 1921-2012

William Aschenbrenner was born on December 20, 1921 in La Center, Clark County, Washington. The son of William M. Aschenbrenner, Sr. and Margaret (Walker) Aschenbrenner.

From Washington, the family moved to Heppner, Oregon and in 1926 they settled in the Zumwalt district in Wallowa County, Oregon, where William completed eight years of school at the ole Zumwalt school house. He then attended high school in Enterprise. He helped on the family ranch until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in September 1942.

After training at several bases in the U.S., Bill boarded a troop ship at Camp Kilmer, N.Y. and landed in Belfast, North Ireland. His outfit landed on Normandy Beach 28 days after D Day. He was an ambulance driver and letter bearer in combat with the 8th Medical Battalion, 8th Infantry Division from July 8, 1944 to May 8, 1945. He was awarded EAME Service Medal with three bronze stars, a good conduct medal and a Purple Heart. He was discharged in October 1945.

On May 28, 1946, he married Rita Shevlin, the daughter of Frank Allen Shevlin and Minnie Minerva (Marks) Shevlin. They lived in Enterprise, Oregon, where they raised four sons.

William worked in the sawmills in Enterprise, Joseph and La Grande. He retired December 31. 1983, from the Boise Cascade mill in La Grande, where he had been head sawfiler for seven years.

The couple had lived in La Grande and Cove for 11 years, but returned to Enterprise where they spent many happy years near family and friends. They enjoyed hunting, fishing, RV camping, riding ATVs and traveling in the Western states and Mexico.

Bill's health was failing and he spent the last several months of his life at the Wallowa Valley Care Center. He passed away on October 9, 2012 in Enterprise.

His family gathered on November 10, 2012 to celebrate his life. He will be laid to rest in the Enterprise Cemetery.
