WWII Veteran, Husband, Father, Grandfather
Leno (LEE no) was born between Venice and the Alps in the town of Vittorio. He arrived in the United States in 1923 at age 9. While his father Domenic worked in the coal mines of West Virginia, Leno served as a farm hand. By 1930, he and the entire Mescolotto Family (Mother Stella and younger brothers John and Arthur)relocated to Philadelphia, PA. In 1936, Leno married Antoinette De Marzo. The marriage produced 4 children: Dominick, Leno, Cynthia, and Barry. (Sadly, Dominick died in his 3rd year) In 1944, Leno was drafted into the US Army where he served as a private first class replacement in France and Germany. He survived an explosion while riding in a jeep that killed the other three occupants: a lieutenant, a captain, and a major. Also noteworthy is his dangerous stint in the Ranger Unit. Before returning in 1946, he helped with the liberation of Norway. For many years he worked as a milliner at a hat factory in Philadelphia's Chinatown until it closed. He would later find work in South Philly politics as a committeeman. A natural, he reportedly converted his entire ward from the Democratic to Republican party. Upon retirement, he and Antoinette ("Nettie") moved to their house in the Poconos before relocating to the warmer latitude of Cape May, NJ in 1975. There, he volunteered his time at the docks where he separated fish. He enjoyed his frequent guests in Cape May including his family as well as the many new friends he made. He also enjoyed whiskey with his coffee and unfiltered Camel cigarettes, depsite two heart attacks. Leno took great pride in and shared the labors of his tomato, pepper, and fig garden and came to be known as "the Mayor of Pennsylvania Ave". It was there on a warm Sunday morning, he was stricken and died of a massive heart attack.
