Son of Thomas and Elizabeth [nee Valentine] Gray. Consort of Louisa A. [nee Burnham] Gray and husband of Lydia Ann [nee Jackson] Gray. As best the family can figure out is ~ Henry first 'wife', Louisa Burnham. was really his paramour. They had 3 chilren: Henry Clay Gray; Ida Jane Gray; and Edward Burnham Gray. Henry did take a wife, Lydia Ann Jackson, and they had 3 children: Elizabeth "Lizzie" Virginia Gray; Anna Rachel Gray; and Sarah Virginia Gray.
Henry led a very colorful and adventurous life as a colonel in the U.S. Army (Union) during the Civil War and the Indian Wars; a local politican in Chester County; a Railroad conductor; a Surveyor for the railroads; a hotel proprietor in Oakland, Chester Co. and Alexander, VA., and a federal employee in the Dept. of Weight & Measurements for the U.S. Customs House in Philadelphia. He worked well into his late eighties, dying at age 94.
Newspaper Article - Dec. 14, 1913:
A West Chester visitor this morning is Col. HARRY E. GRAY, for many years a resident of Whitford and former proprietor of the Oakland Hotel, long since discontinued. Col. GRAY is over four score years of age, yet his is still hale, hearty and active having all his senses keen except for his hearing. He was one time a soldier in the Indian and also Civil War. Of late years, notwithstanding his advanced years, he has held a federal position in the Philadelphia Custom House.
