Civil War veteran. He enlisted as a Private in Company I, 1st Vermont Volunteer Cavalry in November, 1861. Since he was still a minor, his parents removed him from the Army and he returned home. Bassett enlisted again in 1862, this time as a Private in Company D, 15th Vermont Volunteer Infantry. He was mustered in on October 22, 1862, and mustered out on August 5, 1863. Bassett later served as a member of the 98th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment. After the Civil War he became a farmer. According to the Barre, Vermont business directory for 1883-1884, he kept cows and sheep, and made maple syrup and maple sugar.
