Robert Lee Atnip, 81, of Germantown, died Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009, at his residence.
Services were 3 p.m. Tuesday at Williams Funeral Home Chapel in Greenfield with burial in Highland Cemetery in Greenfield.
Atnip was born Aug. 10, 1928, in Bridgeport, Ala., son of the late Charles and Canna Wynne Atnip. He was captain of the undefeated 1946 South Pittsburg High School football team, and was David Lipscomb College's "Mr. Lipscomb" of 1951. He obtained degrees from Lipscomb, Peabody College and his doctorate from the University of Tennessee where he served as a professor of anatomy at the medical units in Memphis. Also while in Memphis, he served as an elder of the Germantown Church of Christ. He was recruited in 1986 to be the director of the Chattanooga Erlanger Hospital Cytogenetics Laboratory and retired in 1993 to a farm near Greenfield.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Mrs. Nancy Priestley Atnip of Germantown; three sons, Joseph Priestley Atnip of Greenfield, Jeffrey E. Atnip of Germantown and Dalton Charles Atnip of Columbia; two daughters, Amelia Lee Atnip Cavataio of Bartlett and Elizabeth L. Atnip Cox of Germantown; one sister, Mary Lucy Taylor of Carterville, Ga.; two brothers, Bill Atnip of Cookeville and Jim Atnip of Nashville; and 14 grandchildren.
