Aleta A. Beckles was born to Seifert Earle and Iris Walkes on May 14, 1922 in St. Michael, Barbados. She spent much of her early years in Grenada.
In 1952, an opportunity became available for Aleta to migrate to the United States to live with her cousins. On June 7, 1956, Aleta married Godfrey Beckles at St. Martin's Episcopal Church. They were together for 35 years before Godfrey passed away on August 16, 1991.
Aleta was a devoted member of Mt. Zion Tabernacle in Brooklyn for many years. She loved God and served him faithfully as a member of the choir and as a Sunday School teacher. She was a thoughtful steward and often reached out to others. She was a Bible scholar and loved to impart her knowledge, especially to young people. She dedicated her life to teaching and caring for children. Aleta was a friend to all and a mother to many, often going about her life in an unassuming manner.
She leaves to mourn her loss: one brother, Vincent Earle; on sister-in-law; one son, Frederick Earle; one daughter-in-law; three daughters, Angela, Jessica, and Joyce; two sons-in-law; seven grandchildren; seven nieces; two nephews; many children who called her "Nana;" and a host of other relatives and friends. She will be truly missed.
