Victor E. ‘Gene' Breceda, a longtime Siskiyou County resident died at his home on September 13, 2002.
He was born in Algoma, Oregon in 1930 and was raised in Hornbrook. He was a 1948 graduate of Yreka High School.
Gene served in the US Navy for four years, including two years in Korea. He earned his teaching credential from Southern Oregon University, teaching at Montague Elementary.
In 1961 Gene suffered an accident which left him a paraplegic. He returned to Southern Oregon and earned his Masters Degree in Education in 1969.
He worked at Yreka High School for 27 years; 12 years as a counselor and 15 years as a social studies teacher.
Gene retired from Yreka High School in 1992, returning in 1996 as principal for ½ year. He felt his proudest moment as an educator occurred when the Class of 1999 honored him by asking him to be their graduation speaker.
Gene served on the Montague City Council for eight years, two years as mayor. He was a member of Shasta Valley Community Club and chairman of the Montague Airport and Yreka/Industrial committees.
He was involved with Siskiyou County Sheriff's Posse, Living Memorial Sculpture Garden, local Masonic organizations, Kiwanis Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Marine Corps League, AMVET clubs, Veterans Advisory Board, American Red Cross, and California Retired Teachers Association.
Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Suzanne: sons, Gordon of Grenada and Milton on Montague; three grandsons; three step-grandchildren; his mother, Vera Breceda of Yreka; an aunt; and numerous cousins and other relatives. He was preceded in death by a son, Larry in 1986.
A funeral service was held September 17th at Yreka High School. Interment followed at Hornbrook/Henley Cemetery.
