Death Claims Ex-Mayor
Services will be held Monday for a former mayor of Chester, Harry Abrams, 86, of 460 Indiana Ave., Chester, died last morning at 4:30 at City Hospital after an extended illness. Mr. Abrams was born Oct. 8, 1892 in Kendall, Pa., a son of the late Thomas Abrams and Margaret Nickle Abrams. He was raised by foster parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. William Allison. Mr. Abrams was mayor of Chester from 1940 to 1944 and again from 1962 to 1966. He was a deputy sheriff from 1956 to 1962. In 1956 he retired as the owner operator of the Chester News Stand. Before that time he worked at the former American Sheet and Tin Plate Co. in Chester. He was president of the board of trustees of the Locust Hill Cemetery Association; a member of the American Legion Post 121, Berg-Costo VFW Post 6450, Masonic Lodge 142 and the K of P in Chester. He was preceded in death by his wife, Miriam Abrams in 1977 and his first wife, Alma Mackel Abrams. He is survived by eight nieces and three nephews. Services will be held from Arner Funeral Chapel at 1 p.m. Monday, Pastor William Gilliland will officiate.
