26th MI Co. D. lost Chauncey Barber who enlisted into Co. K. of the 26th Michigan at Sumner, Gratiot County, at the age of 29. He then transferred to Co. D. on January 1, 1863, and died of the Measles at Alexandria, Virginia on February 22, 1863. (Hiram C. Barber served in Co. H, Uri Barber in Co. G. died at Andersonville, and Hiram Barber of the 4th MI was a member of the Fitzgerald G.A.R. Post 125 in Hasting, MI and died in 1916.) Chauncey was believed to be buried near his comrade, Aaron Stanton (Grave # 744) as Captain Lafayette Church of the 26th Michigan wrote "we have had five deaths in the Company the past week. Aaron Stanton of North Star - and Chauncey Barber of Sumner were buried last Monday, today John W. Warner and Isaiah Kinney were buried - this afternoon David H. Hamp of Sumner died. J.W. Warner and C. Barber died with Congestion of Lungs, the others with Measles..."
