Emil Louis Wend was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1878 and came to the United States in December 1881 with his parents. Of his five siblings, he was the only one born in another country. His family eventually settled in Lemont, Illinois, where Emil witnessed a tribe of native Americans who were moved through Lemont, heading west.

Emil married Wilhelmina Zeuner on September 26, 1905 and had five children: Vanita (1907), Milton (1909), Emil Paul (1911), Karl (1916) and Albert (1924). He had several businesses in Lemont from a tavern, a general store, a bakery, an ice cream parlor and a restaurant. A street in Lemont was named for him on his 100th birthday.
