Susan was born in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Scotland.
She arrived in Boston with mother Rose Ann Cunningham Barker, brother Thomas and sisters Ellen A. and Margaret Barker via ship, the "Atlas". Father Peter Barker had emigrated about one year before.
Susan worked as a domestic after her arrival in Boston.
About August 1895, she married Florence J. Donahue, a plumber by trade who was born in Brookline, MA. (At that time, Florence was a popular name for males as well as females.)
The Donahues had three children: Peter Charles Donahue (born Nov 4, 1897), who also became a plumber like his father; Catherine Donahue (born in July 1898); and John J. Donahue (born Jan 6, 1900). Peter Charles and his father lived in Dorchester (Sagamore Street) following Susan's death, and eventually moved to Quincy, MA.
