Ruth N. Adams
Valley Hills Funeral Home
YAKIMA - On Saturday, February 3, 2007, after a suffering a long illness, Ruth N. Adams went to live with her Savior, Jesus. She died in what had become her home in recent years, Bethany of Silver Lake in Everett, WA.
Ruth was born to Arthur and Beatrice (Partch) Garwood on June 14, 1928, in Outlook, WA, and lived in the Yakima Valley most of her life. Because of her failing health due to Alzheimer's disease, she resided near her daughter, Carla, for the past 7 years. Early years of Ruth's education were spent at the Outlook school. She graduated salutatorian of Sunnyside High School, class of 1946, and attended Whitworth College in Spokane, WA. On May 21, 1948, she and Newt Adams were married in the Church of the Brethren, Outlook, WA, of which they were members.
Ruth loved playing the piano and, with her Grandfather Partch's encouragement, she began playing for church services at age 12, and continued to do so for over 30 years. She began her working career as a legal secretary for Boose & Garrison, attorneys in Sunnyside, WA, followed by many years of service as a secretary for the CPA firm Boyd, Olofson & Co. and later, Proebstel and Michels, CPA's, from which she retired in 1998. Ruth was overjoyed with the arrival of each of her four grandchildren and enjoyed cooking special meals for them when they visited. She also enjoyed taking them for outdoor walks on the farm and exposing them to the wonders of nature. A favorite pastime of Ruth's was crocheting. She made many fun stuffed toys, blankets and pillows for her grandchildren. She passed many hours with her love of playing Gospel songs on her piano and accordion. Ruth enjoyed working in her yard on the farm, and for a number of years she tended a large vegetable and flower garden. Throughout her life, and before illness overtook her, Ruth enjoyed reading (especially missionary related books) and she was an avid student of the Bible, studying and memorizing God's Word.
She was a woman of few words and led her life by example. Ruth was a woman of true virtue, integrity and character who will be fondly remembered by those who knew her.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband of 47 years, Newt.
She is survived by her daughters Carla and husband Clarence Prins of Snohomish, WA, and Beverly and husband Bill Van Oostrum of Yakima, WA; grandchildren Dr. Renee Prins of Portland, OR, Carlene Prins of Kirkland, WA, Corrie Van Oostrum of Yakima, WA, and Ryan Van Oostrum of Newberg, OR. Ruth is also survived by three sisters, Dorothy Darr and Charlotte Curfman both of Sunnyside, WA, and Audrey De la Riva of San Jose, CA, and their families, by Newt's brother and sister, Ted Adams and Veda Nissen and family, as well as uncles Ed Partch and Mickey Lyon, aunt May Angel and numerous cousins.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2007, at 1:00 pm at the Outlook Cemetery, followed by a memorial and celebration of Ruth's life at 2:00 pm at the Grace Brethren Church, located at 703 East Franklin Avenue, Sunnyside, WA.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Ruth's favorite radio broadcast, Back to the Bible, P.O. Box 82808, 6400 Cornhusker Highway, Lincoln, NB 68501-2808.
