Joining St. Agnes School, Concord, in 1979, and continuing for 32 years until her retirement in June 2011, Sister Rita continued to deepen her unique gifts of contemplative prayer and common sense spirituality. She shared her wisdom, understanding and counsel with the school children, their teachers and parents, and with the CSJ Sisters and Associates in the area. She recognized and encouraged the talents in every child as she enabled each one to participate in the annual Christmas pageants, the Bell Choir or in other creative performances.
Just as she enabled others to develop their artistic and musical gifts, Sister Rita also spent her leisure time in productive creativity. Her exquisite stained glass windows and images adorn churches and homes; her projects have helped raise money for the Sisters' missions and retirement fund, as well as for many charitable causes in the Bay Area.
In 1991, Sister Rita received the Diocese of Oakland St. Elizabeth Seton Award for service to Catholic education. Later the same year she received the Distinguished Teacher Award from the National Catholic Education Association. In 2004, Sister Rita received the highest diocesan honor, the Medal of Merit.
Sister Rita's brothers, Francis and Donald, and sister, Rita Henry, predeceased her. She is survived by her brother, Paul, and her sisters, Rose Varney and Phyllis Thompson; her Sisters and Associates in the Bay Area Community and in the Los Angeles Province; and many grateful students, parents, and faithful friends.
