Cyrus William Achenbach, 54, of 590 E. King St., chief of the Franklin County Correctional Department, died last night at 9:45 at the Chambersburg Hospital. He was admitted to the hospital yesterday morning after being stricken with a cerebral hemorrhage at his office in the Courthouse Annex.

In 1928, Mr. Achenbach joined the old State Highway Patrol, which merged with the State Police as the Pennsylvania State Police in 1938. He served in Gettysburg and Harrisburg before his assignment to Chambersburg in 1936. After serving two years here, he served at McConnellsburg, Lykens, and Carlisle. He returned to Chambersburg in 1945 and remained there until his retirement in January 1953.

During more than half his tenure he was assigned to the examination detail. He held the rank of corporal from 1941 until his retirement. Following retirement, he joined the Chambersburg Ford Company as assistant service manager.

A year after he retired from the State Police, he was appointed Franklin County parole officer and had a leading role in setting up the correctional department which he headed at the time of his death.

Mr. Achenbach was a former neighborhood commissioner and assistant district commissioner of the Conococheague District of the Boy Scouts of America.
A member of the United Central Presbyterian Church for 20 years, Mr. Achenbach served as an elder for 13 years. He was clerk of the Session at the time of his death. He had been a commissioner to the Carlisle Presbytery on a number of occasions and served on the General Council of the Presbytery. A former president of both the Men's Brotherhood and Men's Council of the church, he also served as an adviser to the Youth Fellowship groups for several years and as a teacher in the Sunday School.
He was a member of the State Police Association of Pennsylvania, the National Probation and Parole Association, and the Fraternal Order of Police.

A native of Palmyra, he was born May 18, 1906, the son of Mrs. Bessie Zimmerman Achenbach, Palmyra, and the late Charles R. Achenbach.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, is his wife, Mrs. Mildred Durboraw Achenbach; a son William D., of Carlisle; a grandson, and a brother, Alfred Achenbach, of Hummelstown.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Central Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Donald E. May officiating. Burial will be made in Norland Cemetery.

Friends will be received at the Sellers Funeral Home Wednesday evening from 7 to 8 o'clock and at the church an hour before the services.
