Daniel Leeper Ashby (May 29, 1842-May 13, 1898)
D.L. Ashby, late of Artesia, California, died on Friday, May 13th from injuries received on Tuesday night. He had been to Long Beach where he sold a load of potatoes. He had spent part of the day at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Simmons who were oldtime friends and left here for his home at a little after 4 o'clock. He was seen by persons near Los Alamitos at dusk. He was found near the place the next morning at about 7 o'clock, in an unconscious condition. Efforts were made to restore him to consciousness but without avail, although he lived some 52 hours after being found. His pocket-book, containing $11, and his spectacles and papers were found in and beside the roadway. In the community there is a feeling that he had been fbuly dealt with, but of this we cannot say until the inquest has been held and findings reported. Mr. Ashby was born in Chariton, Chariton County, Missouri, May 29, 1842; was married to Margaret Brown. As a result of this union nine children were born, all of whom are living, seven here and two in the east, all being grown. His wife preceded him in death, having died in this city, September 29, 1897. His mother-on-law, Mrs. Mary Ashby, aged 85 years and his daughter kept house for him. Funeral services were held on Saturday, the 14th at Artesia, Rev. Mr. Ashley conducting the services and the remains were buried in the cemetery at Artesia. Mr. and Mrs. Simmons from this place attended the funeral. There was a large attendance of neighbors, whose sympathies are very intense.
The coroner's record of 9 June, 1898 states that death was due to fracture of skull by an accidental fall from his wagon.
