Frances Vencencia Barker
Sept. 14, 1918 – May 8, 2016
Born Frances Vencencia Dobry in Minco, Oklahoma to John Julian Dobry and Mary Novotny Dobry. Her mother passed not long after she was born; thus she and her eleven siblings were raised on the farm by her oldest sister, Mary Magdalena. She attended elementary boarding school in Chickasha, OK and then completed high school in Minco. Upon graduation she moved to Chicago and lived with her oldest sister, Mary, and her husband, Joe Holzer. She worked in the new born unit of St. Joseph de Padua hospital. While in Chicago, she met and married WWII veteran Harry Marvin Barker in May, 1944. They had six children; Robert Guy, Thomas Lee, Marjory Frances, Sandra Jean, Elizabeth Ann and Dorothy (Deb) Evelyn.
Fran was a wife and mother first. She held many positions on the PTA of the local elementary school. She was a volunteer in the local March of Dimes, going around many blocks in the Chicago neighborhood where they lived. Her husband, Harry (Duke) passed in 1962. She then went into the work force for the first time since she had married. She secured a position with the Bell Telephone Company and retired from there after 20 years.
In 1997, Fran sold her house in Chicago and she, and her youngest, Debi, drove to Alaska where she settled in the Clam Gulch area. Fran drove to Soldotna several times a week to walk the aisles of Fred Meyer for exercise and then meet up with a group known as the Kaladi Club.
She is preceded in death by her son, Robert and two of her daughters, Elizabeth and Debi and her eleven siblings.
Fran is survived by her son, Thomas Barker and his wife, Jenny; her daughters Marj Wiley and her husband Lee (Gus); Sandie Barker and her husband Bill Christian; daughter-in-law, Judi Barker; son-in-law Doug Schmitz; granddaughters, Megan Bowen, Courtney Barker, Shannon Barker, Renee Brooker, Carla Schmitz-Frank, Deirdre Wiley, Lela Walker; grandsons, Tommy Barker, Timmy Barker, Craig Thalhauser; great grandchildren, Jackson, Cailin, Dan, Solaya, Beckham, Ezra , Jameson, Zane, Tyler, Rayna and many nieces and nephews.
Fran was a master at crossword puzzles, had an adventurous spirit, an infectious laugh, and was the fearless leader of the Bossy Barker Broads. She was a good egg. A burial service will be held in Chicago at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank, 33955 Community College Dr., Soldotna, AK 99669 or a charity of your choice.
