When Union soldiers marched through James's place during the War Against Southern Independence, his son John Calvin took the family's mules and horses to the swamps around the Sipsey River so the Yankees couldn't find them. James had 17 children. By 1975, the Huffman family had occupied the James Huffman homestead at Jena continuously for 130 years. James's nickname was "Square Jim" because he was a Justice of the Peace.
