Les Biederman founded Traverse City's first radio station, WTCM 1370 AM, in January 1941 (the frequency changed to 1400 AM 2 months later, and to 580 AM in 1981). In 1945, he signed on WATT 1240 AM, Cadillac; WATZ 1450 AM, Alpena in November 1946; WMBN 1340 AM, Petoskey on April 30, 1947; WATC 900 AM, Gaylord in July 1950 (became WZXM on April 4, 1983, WMJZ on July 13, 1987, and WSNQ from January 29, 1990 until 2002), and were all collectively the Paul Bunyan Network. In 1951, Les Biederman was president of a corporation for promoting and developing a community college in Traverse City, and Northwestern Michigan College began on September 17, 1951. Mr. Biederman signed on WPBN-TV Channel 7, Traverse City on February 13, 1954, and WTOM-TV Channel 4, Cheboygan on May 16, 1959.
