Birth: 1940
Death: 1959

Dickin Medal Recipient. Probably born in Egypt, Tich, a black terrier mutt, was adopted by The 1st Battalion, King's Royal Rifle Corp during action in the Western Desert before El Alamein in 1941. When the Battalion reached Algiers in 1943, Tich was taken care of by Rifleman Thomas Walker, a medic, and accompanied him during his duties on the front line, usually riding on the hood of his Bren gun carrier or stretcher jeep through all weathers. In 1944, her comrades smuggled her aboard the ship that took the battalion to Italy - she gave birth en route. She remained at Walker's side in Italy, where he was placed in charge of the Regimental Aid Post on the River Marzeno. The post came under heavy shelling and Tich received a head wound, Walker evacuated all the wounded including Tich. The Battalion's commanding officer, recommended her for a Dickin Medal, writing: "Her courage and devotion to duty were of very real and considerable value and her courageous example materially helped many men to keep their heads...in times of extreme danger. The sight of her put heart in the men as she habitually rode on the bonnet of her master's jeep and refused to leave her post even...under heavy fire." She was awarded her Dickin Medal in September 1949 at Wembley in front of a crowd of 8000 people; her citation stated, "For loyalty, courage and devotion to duty under hazardous conditions of war 1941 to 1945, while serving with the 1st King's Rifle Corps in North Africa and Italy." She and Rifleman Walker retired to civilian life in Newcastle. The pair took part in fund-raising activities for the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals. Upon her death at about age 19, she was interred in the PDSA cemetery beside several other Dickin Medal Recipients.
