J. Von L. Baker, 97, of 1780 Raleigh Road, Raleigh, died 3:15 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008, at Ferrell Hospital, Eldorado.
Services were held 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, 2008, at First United Methodist Church in Eldorado with the Rev. Julie Allison officiating. Burial was in Wolf Creek Cemetery. Visitation was 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008, at Watson Funeral Home and 1 p.m. to service time Sunday at the church.
He was born April 22, 1910, in Eldorado to John Carlin and Mattie (Watson) Baker. On June 24, 1940, he married the former Gwendolyn J. Yost in Lebanon, and she survives in Raleigh.
He served in the Army as a sergeant in World War II and was a teacher in the Eldorado school system. He was a lifetime member of Eldorado First United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Eldorado Lions Club and Retired Teachers Association. He was a former Citizen of the Year. He was a former grand marshal of Eldorado Town and Country Days Parade. He was a 1936 graduate of Southern Illinois University and honored at his 70th class reunion for his contributions to society. He attended his 71st class reunion in 2007. He was a member of Lincoln Academy and a contributor to Southeastern Illinois College. He was an avid gardener and woodworker and photographer. He was a yearbook editor at Eldorado Township High School for many years and was honored at the Raleigh Days celebration.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, James A. (Stephanie) Baker of Waco, Texas; a daughter, Cynthia Baker Posegate Anderson of Atlanta, Ga.; a brother, John Emil (Vivian) Baker of Ocala, Fla.; three sisters, Vivian (Carl) Ferrell of Carbondale, Jewell Johnson of Evansville, Ind., and Laura Burgard of Lake Worth, Fla.; six grandchildren, Ann Schwimley of Ohio, Catherine LeRuyet of California, William Posegate of Oregon, Winston Posegate of Sipan, Alexander Posegate of Georgia and Christina Baker of Texas; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Randall Baker; and a sister, Lillian Moore.
Contributions may be made to the Eldorado Lions Club and left at the funeral home.
