Efren Taburnal Afante, 83. 1199SEIU retiree. The Afante family is deeply saddened to announce the sudden passing of Efren T. Afante (formerly of Blauvelt, N.Y., and Rio Rancho) of Buhi, Camarines Sur, Philippines, on Dec. 5.
Interment occurred on Dec. 14 at Buhi Catholic Cemetery in San Pascual, Philippines. He was a loving husband of 45 years to Josefina (Sepagan) Afante of Nabua, Philippines; cherished father to Efren John Afante and his wife Maurisa, of Altus, Okla., Christina Afante of Boston; doting grandfather to Luis Afante of Boston, and Jayce Efren Afante of Moore, Okla.; dear brother to Anita Afante (formerly of New York, N.Y.) and Julia Estanislao of Buhi, Philippines; beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews; loyal friend and philanthropist.
Afante was a regular contributor to Buhionline.com, member of the civic organizations Katzenjammers (KJS), and the Knights of Rizal, and sponsor of the Ezer Foundation Performing Arts and Orchestra.
Prior to establishing the non-profit radio station Our Lady's Foundation Inc. DWEA 97.7 FM in Buhi, Afante was employed at Columbia University for 25 years. He enjoyed his retirement, playing the double bass and serving integral roles within the Filipino American communities in New York and New Mexico. Afante also volunteered his time working with youth groups and on environmental and social justice causes.
