Elmer learned a trade from his father, for he was in 1943 a licensed stationary fireman (boilerman), with three years experience. He was from 1950 until he died, traffic manager (transportation and shipping) of the Wilson Division of Engelhard Industries in Newark.
He married Hilda Fryling on 31 August 1940. Hilda was for many years an executive secretary at Engelhard. Elmer had only a grade school education, but was a lecturer on American history, appearing before mainly Masonic groups, and traveling throughout New Jersey, into Pennsylvania, and to Washington DC. Elmer was a member of twenty different Masonic organizations, and had the 32nd degree in both the Scottish and York rites. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in 1960, and in Cleveland, Ohio, 29 September 1965, became a 33rd degree Mason.
When he married Hilda he lived in East Orange. He and Hilda lived at first in Elizabeth, and then in Newark. January to August 1943 they lived at 993 Grove Street, in Irvington; they later lived on Maple Avenue in Irvington, and from there moved, circa 1961 to 143 Ball Street, Irvington, which was to be their last address. In addition to history lecturing, Elmer volunteered at the Veteran's Hospital in East Orange, NJ, assisting with chaplain services.
He died on Christmas Eve, 1967, at Irvington General Hospital, Irvington, New Jersey, after suffering a series of strokes.
