Ida Elizabeth "Sis" Maze was born Ida Elizabeth Mazza in White Rock, Marion County, West Virginia. She married Cyrus Harold "Huffy" Huffman in 1942 when he was serving in the U.S. Army during World War II and this marriage produced four children: Cyrus Harold "Cy" Jr. (b. 1944), Elizabeth Ann "Libby" (b; 1952), Charlene Rae (b: 1955), and Carol Lee (b: 1956). She was the third of six children in her family, the only girl. Her paternal uncle, Gilbert (1900-1985), led the successful effort to have the family's surname name changed from Mazza to Maze between the murder of her paternal grandfather, who had immigrated from Italy, in 1923 and the 1930 U.S. Census.
