Birth: Oct. 5, 1853, USA
Death: Apr. 15, 1942
Tennessee, USA

Dr. Alfred Franklin Austin, father of Mrs. Paul Boensch, will be buried this afternoon at Scotts Hill, Tenn., where years ago he carried dental surgery into homes of the community in much the same manner as the same manner as the modern traveling dental clinic does today in rural sections. Services will be held at 2 o'clock in the Methodist Church at Scotts Hill, Spencer-Sturla Funeral Home has charge. The death of Dr. Austin at 6:45 o'clock yesterday morning at his daughter's home, 1532 Monroe, followed an illness of two and a half weeks. He had been active until stricken with flu and nine days ago received a severe shock in a fall. He had lived in Memphis at intervals and had been here constantly for the past 18 months. He was 88.

Among his prized papers was a deed which gave his father, Ephraim Austin, possession of three slaves. The elder Austin was a merchant and operated a cotton gin at Scotts Hill. Experiences during the Civil War were often related by Dr. Austin, who was a student of history and remembered dates and main events in the life of the Nation. He learned dentistry by serving an apprenticeship and later attended Vanderbilt University, according to the custom of that time. His profession did not require all of his time and he taught about 25 years in the Scotts Hill School and in others nearby. He later went to Sardis, Tenn., where he practiced his profession until he was 65, when he retired because of poor eyesight. He moved to Greenville, Miss., where he owned a half interest in a commissary at Napanee Plantation.

His wife was Martha Swift, daughter of a Methodist circuit rider. Besides his daughter in Memphis, he leaves four other daughters, Mrs. J.W. Vance of Greenville, Mrs. Mildred Anderson of Poteau, Okla., Mrs. J.W. Wheat of Harrison, Ark., and Mrs. Carl Jones of Jackson, Tenn.; three sons, H.F. Austin of New Orleans, Thomas Austin of Greenville, Robert Austin of Greenwood, Miss.; a sister, Mrs. Adelaide Powers of Henderson, Tenn.; and a brother, Robert Austin of Foss, Okla.
