Martha Jane died at approximately 12 days old. She was the first born daughter of: Willard M. Hodge and Willie Levi Hodge (Aud). My Granny (Willie) says that Martha was the fattest, most beautiful baby that she had ever seen. She recants that Martha was born with a head full of curly strawberry blonde hair. Martha died during the night and was found the next morning by her parents. Her cause of death was possibly crib death. She was buried in an unmarked grave somewhere in this cemetery.* Granny says that a local couple made her a dress and little white casket. There was snow on the ground and the ground was frozen so it took a while to dig her grave, and my Granny was unable to attend the burial. Martha's grave was marked at one time with a simple wooden cross that has long since disappeared. After many years, Granny was haunted by the fact that she did not know where her first born baby was buried. There are possibly hundreds of unmarked graves in this area. Back in "the day", Welsh Rogers Cemetery was an old "country cemetery" servicing alot of hard working poor families in the Sale Creek area. It was not uncommon for people to either not mark the graves or use something as simple as a stone or stick of wood as a marker and of course we all know that those things do not last long. This story is sad on a lot of levels.
