Born in Creedmore,Travis County, Texas in 1854 to parents James Alexander Berry and Mary Rountree. Resided in Travis County Tx until about 1900 when he moved to Burnet County Texas and then on to Yancey, Medina County Texas. He married first Mary Paralee Cameron on 4 June 1874 and they were parents of eight children, James Cameron, Minnie Ann, Thomas Reed, Mary Maud, Laura Maud, Felix Smith, Nora Lee and Mary Paralee (named for her mother who died shortly after her birth). Mary Etta Collins was a very close friend to Mary Paralee and was staying with and nursing Mary Paralee after the birth of the child. When Mary Paralee died from "childbirth fever" Mary Etta married John Hawkins as a marriage of convience. Mary Etta and John Hawkins had 12 children of their own. They were Mark Milford, William Rhoton, Bessie Lee, John Travis, Charles Harvey, Estelle B " Nettie", Myrtle Ettie, Anna Pearl, Lola Essie, Thomas Jackson, and Robert Raymond.
John Hawkins became ill while on a trip from Yancey, Tx to Bandera, Tx to purchase cedar posts for their farm fencing. He was taken home where he died, April 12, 1910, shortly upon arrival and is buried at the Yancey Cemetery.
