Washington Carey was born to Phillip Cary (old spelling) and Mariah Richards in December 1838, in Greenbrier, VA (now West Virginia).

The 1870 Census shows the Carey family in Charleston, WV. Washington was a house painter, and his father Phillip was living with the family at the time and working as a day laborer.
The 1880 Census shows the Carey family in the Upper township of Lawrence Co., Ohio. Washington was still working as a painter, and his father was still living with the family at that time and at the advanced age of 75 still working as a farmer.
The 1900 Census shows Washington living in Coal Grove Village, Ohio with his son Frederick & Frederick's family. He was still occupied as a house painter.
Washington Carey died on July 15, 1902. He is buried in the Newton Cemetery in Coal Grove, Ohio.
