Samuel Wade Curtis, 86, of Washington, formerly of Claysville, died Wednesday, November 18, 2009, in Washington Hospital.

He was born January 15, 1923, in Washington County, a son of the late Paul Clinton and Essa Westfall Curtis. His stepmother, Ida May Westfall Curtis, who raised him from the age of eight, died on November 15, 1997.

Mr. Curtis was a member of Claysville United Methodist Church.

He was a graduate of Claysville High School.

Mr. Curtis served as a medic in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II until his discharge in February 1946.

In 1950, he graduated from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh and, in the same year, purchased Curtis Pharmacy, Claysville, which he owned and operated until his retirement in 1987.

He was a longtime member of F&AM Lodge 447 and James R. Hunt American Legion Post 639, both in Claysville.

Mr. Curtis enjoyed playing golf and photography.

On May 18, 1956, he married Leota Mae Hamilton Taylor, who died March 10, 2004.

Surviving are a brother, Bill Curtis of Arkansas, and a sister, Joan (Kenneth) Clark of Washington.

Deceased are two brothers, Jack and Bob Curtis, and a sister, Shirley Crane.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the Michael H. Heinrich Funeral Home, Claysville, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 21, 2009, with the Rev. Meade Lacock officiating. Interment will follow in Claysville Cemetery. The U.S. Army and American Legion James R. Hunt Post 639, Claysville, will accord military honors at graveside. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Claysville United Methodist Church or a charity of the donor's choice.
