Married Jane Palace Campbell in 1836. The couple had 12 children. Among them were Richmond Cole, James, George W., Mary Jane, Elizabeth Belle, Julia Hannah, Thomas, Robert Walter, and Eudora Ann.
Allen Barr and three sons served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Son, Richmond, died in the battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse. The other three family members returned home wounded.

Moved in 1839 with his wife and one child to Grenada, Mississippi. The family moved to Bell County, Texas in 1869 and to the J. R. Townsen farm on the Lampasas River in Lampasas County, Texas in about 1874. Two years later they settled on a farm in Mills County, Texas.
