Richard Bridges "Rocky" (1948 - 2009)

Richard "Rocky" Bridges November 30, 1948 - August 27, 2009 Visitation for Richard Steven Bridges "Rocky" will be held at Basham Funeral Care (3312 Niles Street) on Wednesday, September 2, 2009 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held in the Basham Funeral Care Chapel on Thursday, September 3, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park. Loving Husband, brother, father and grandfather, was born November 30, 1948 in Bakersfield, California, to J.W. and Lilly Marie Bridges. Richard attended both South and West High Schools, where he was a standout athlete in football, wrestling, boxing, and track. Richard was a 2x Golden Glove boxing champion and 1968 Olympic team alternate. Richard continued to standout while attending Bakersfield College and San Francisco State. While attending SF State, Richard married his high school sweet heart, Linda, and pursued his passion to become a teacher. The lack of teaching jobs however, forced Richard to seek employment as a Police Officer. The legendary and prolific journey of "Rocky" began in 1973 when he was employed with the Daily city Police Department. Richard transferred to the San Jose Police Department in 1977 and continued his heroic career and was awarded the highest honor; the "Medal of Hazardous Duty" and the "Medal of Honor". Richard received numerous honors and accolades before medically retiring from Law Enforcement, in 1986. Richard went back to college, receiving his credentials and pursuing his first passion, teaching. Richard was a loved and admired teacher and coach at Wasco High School. He shared many stories, taught many of life's lessons and impacted many lives before retiring from teaching in 2000. Richard was a wonderful and generous man. Anyone fortunate enough to have met him can attest, to what a daredevil, risk taker, story teller, fighter, Hero, and larger than life role model and father figure, he was. The magnitude of impact of this great mans life is immeasurable. He touched so many lives, and helped so many people, he will truly be missed. Richard is preceded in death by is mother, Lilly Marie; father, J.W. and son, Andrew. He is survived by his sister, Patricia; brother, Brian and children, Jeremiah, Angela, Joshua, Tamsen, Kimberly, Rebecca, Brandilyn, and Hunter as well as ten grandchildren. The family would like to graciously thank Richard's sister Patricia, and her husband Jacob, for their tireless care, love and support for Richard during his heroic battle with cancer. The family would also like to thank Optimal Hospice, Basham Funeral Care, and all others who helped in his care.
