John Soderquist, aka Johan Andersson Söderqvist, was born 30 November 1851 in Fröbenbenning, Avesta parish,on the border between Dalarna & Västmanland, son of Anders Persson and Sara Katarina Persdotter. He died 20 December 1937 at his home on the Soderquist farm between Sunset Lake and Nine Lake, Bates Township, Iron County, Michigan. With his parents and siblings, he moved to Husby parish in 1871 and there he married Anna Lovisa Jansdotter 4 July 1874 (poss. at the church in Stjärnsund). He emigrated from Sweden 22 April 1887 with his wife Anna Lovisa and their 3 surviving children Johan Emil age 10, Anna Elida age 9 and Selma Sofia age 3. Before emigrating, John worked as a Hyttdräng (blast furnace worker) in Valla & Horndals Bruk (both in By parish). On coming to Iron County, he and his family first lived in Iron River while establishing his homestead at Sunset Lake where he lived the rest of his life. Together, John and Anna Lovisa had 7 children, 2 of which died as children in Sweden. John and his family were pioneer members and founders of First Lutheran Church in Iron River, Michigan.

OBITUARY Iron River Reporter Dec 21 1937 "Aged Bates Man Dies Yesterday: John Soderquist Lived In District For 50 Years; Rites Tomorrow"
John Soderquist, age 86, died yesterday morning at 6 o'clock at his farm home in the Sunset lake district following an illness of two months.
He had been a resident of the district for more than half a century. He was born in Sweden, Nov. 13, 1851, and came to the United States with his wife in May, 1886, settling on the Bates farm in April, 1887.
Survivors include his widow Anna and five children, Mrs. Herbert Franquist and Mrs. Hjalmer Melstrom of Iron River city, Mrs. Jesse Waite of Bates, Mrs. Victor Larson of Iron Mountain, and John [this appears to be incorrect] and Emil, both of Bates township.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon, Wednesday, at 2 o'clock from the farm home with the Rev. Carl I. Fant officiating. Interment will follow in Bates township cemetery.
Mr. and Mrs. Soderquist celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary six years ago.

FUNERAL NOTICE Iron River Reporter Dec 24 1937 "Grandsons Are Pallbearers For Aged Bates Man"
Six grandsons of John Soderquist, 86, who died Monday, served as pallbearers for the aged Bates township resident at funeral services held Wednesday afternoon from the farm home at Sunset lake.
Interment in Bates cemetery followed. The Rev. Carl I. Fant, pastor of the First Lutheran church, officiated.
Pallbearers were Earl Melstrom, Andrew Waite, Marvin Larson, Gustav Frangquist, Erich Ohlsson and Jack Waite.
Relatives and friends from out of the district who were here for the rites included Mr. and Mrs. Victor Larson, Marvin Larson and Mrs. Charles Saxon of Iron Mountain; Earl Melstrom, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Krempasky and Mrs. Krempasky, sr. of Crystal Falls, and Ardis Frangquist of Evanston, Ill.

The earliest settlement was confined largely to Township 43, Range 34. Following is a list of the early families in Bates and dates of land purchased. Many of them had settled earlier than the date of the transfer of property indicates.

Leonard Lind and his wife, Johanna, were both born in Sweden, he in 1880 and she in 1874. After they were married, Leonard came alone to America. His mother's two brothers, Gustaf Anderson and John Soderquist, had already established homesteads in Bates.
Soon after that, the family moved to Bates and lived in the Helgemo School house. In 1909, Leonard bought about 30 acres from his cousin, Emil Soderquist, in Section 16.

OBITUARY of Selma Frangquist 1938 says she came from Sweden to the US with her father John Soderquist in 1887, and they settled in Bates Twp. He died Dec 1937 at age 86.
