Long a power in southern California crime circles, Joe Dip remained a obscure figure until featured in Jimmy Fratianno's The Last Mafioso. The son of respected crime figure Salvatore Charles Dippolito, Joe Dip was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He joined his father in California after serving a 1 year prison stint in New York for illegally transporting liquor. Dippolito's status and stature grew as he gained control of the Inland Empire crime scene.
To limit Dippolito's influence to crime circles would be to ignore his many successful business ventures which included a Third Street hotel in San Bernardino, a sizeable vineyard and ranch in Ontario and several real-estate deals which were conducted with some of the eras best known entertainment figures. Doc from Gunsmoke, Frank Sinatra and comedian Danny Kaye are just a few of the figures who did business with Joe Dip. The Dippolito vineyard sold grapes to many of the leading wineries in the Ontario and Upland area including Joe Fillippi, the Vai brothers, the Massi and DiCarlo operations.
Joe Dip died in January 1974 after being stricken by a heart attack while attending the wedding of one of his daughters. He was laid to rest in the Mausoleum at Bellevue in Ontario.
