Dominic J. (Abby) Abbatello, 86, was called home by our Lord on Friday, November 16, 2007. Born in Bluefield, West Virginia on May 10, 1921, he was the son of the late Joseph and Rose Abbatello. Mr. Abbatello is predeceased by his wife of 38 years, Eula Lee Abbatello and his sister, Rose Collins.
Abby was a tank crewman in the U.S. Army during WWII. He served under George Patton and participated in three campaigns, Rhineland, Ardenne, and Central Europe earning three bronze stars. He retired from Norfolk & Western Railroad after serving as an engineer for 36 years, was the Local Chairman for United Transportation Union for 16 years, served as President and Vice President of Aragona-Pembroke Little League for 28 years and was Vice President of Aragona-Pembroke Community Center.
He is survived by his daughter, Teresa Dyer and husband, Mike, of Bradenton, Florida, daughter Peggy Harman and husband Howard of Jacksonville, Florida, grandson, Kevin Harman and his wife, Sandy, granddaughters Beth Murphy and Anne Marie Harman, and two great-grandchildren, Austin Murphy and Jessica Harman, brothers George Abbatello and Joseph Abbatello, Jr., both of Roanoke, Virginia, sister, Carmela Dillow of Bluefield, West Virginia and sister, Minnie Taylor or Martinsville, Virginia and nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Mass will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 5, 2008 at St. Mark's Catholic Church, 1505 Kempsville Road, Virginia Beach, with Father James C. Griffin, celebrant. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
