ALDREDGE III, WILLIAM L. "Has anybody told you they love you today? Well, I love you," was the usual greeting of William Aldredge, affectionately called "Wild Bill" or "Sweet William" depending on how long each of his friends knew him. Bill passed away October 4, 2011, at age 72, from lung cancer and COPD. Born in Dunn, NC in 1938 and raised in Bradenton, FL, Bill graduated from Florida State U., served in the Army in Korea, and worked variously as an actor, in sales for IBM and Pitney Bowes, as owner of MPAI advertising, in real estate as joint broker/owner of Back to the Basics Realty, and sole owner of Aldredge Realty in Vista, CA. A recovering alcoholic with 29 years of sobriety, Bill never did anything halfway; his life spanned both riches and hedonism, despair and dipsy dumpsters, until he found a Higher Power and turned over his will and his life. He sometimes joked that the only thing he ever did really well was to stay sober, but his real success was the love and inspiration he left to those who knew him and his dedication to the program of Alcoholics Anonymous. Bill loved travel and adventure, vacationing with family, trail riding in the Rockies, and taking cross-country trips on his Harley, both solo and with friends. In sobriety his family was restored to him, and he impacted all of them by his generosity, unconditional love (at times tough love) and encouragement. He is survived by his wife Laura Mitchell (and several ex-wives); children William L. Aldredge IV, James Todd Aldredge, Christopher John Kavanagh (adopted), Dess Aldredge Benedetto, Bradley James Aldredge, and Alexandra BareƱo Park (stepdaughter) and their families, including nine grandchildren. He is also survived by his mother, Cecelia Adcox Aldredge Moorhead, and sister Sandra Aldredge Smith. His children gave him a wonderful tribute party for family and friends in July while he still lived -and he enjoyed it immensely. Bill was larger than life even in the challenging last weeks on this earth. His deep relationship with his God was apparent in how he chose each day to live, and in dying he made a decision to donate his body to the UCSD Medical School for research. As Bill always said in farewell, "Have a great day if you want to!"
