Larry James Adkins, 58, of Big Spring, died on Sunday, October 19, 2003, in a Midland hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday, October 21, 2003 at the Trinity Baptist Church, in Big Spring with Dr. Randy Cotton , Pastor, and Dr. Claude Craven, retired Baptist Minister, officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park Big Spring.
He was born on February 18, 1945, in Big Spring, Texas and married Lila Adkins on April 7, 1974 in Big Spring.
Larry grew up in the Lomax community and graduated from Stanton High School. He attended Howard College, North Texas State University, Texas Tech, and then later graduated from West Texas State with his Bachelors Degree in Journalism and a minor in Agriculture and English.
He also received his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army while at West Texas State and served as an Infantry Officer 1st Lieutenant of the 1st Air Calvary Division in Vietnam.
Larry farmed for over 30 years and also taught English at Big Spring High School for 3 years.
He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He and his wife taught the couples Sunday School Class for many years, and Larry had worked with the children in junior church for 29 years.
He served as an officer on the board of the Howard County Soil Conservation District for many years. He also served as the secretary of the Lomax Farmers' Gin for several years.
Larry and Lila were involved in their kids activities and were active members of the baseball, tennis and football booster clubs.
Survivors include his wife Lila of Big Spring; two sons, Leslie Adkins and his wife Kellie, of Houston and Landon Adkins of Lubbock; one daughter Larissa Adkins of Big Spring; his parents, Lawrence and Evelyn Adkins of Stanton; two brothers, Bob Adkins and his wife Deborah of Lomax and David Adkins of Snyder; two sisters and brothers-in-law Molly and Jack Madison of Stanton and DeeDee and Barry Colwell of Seattle, Washington; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents Arthur and Odessa Stallings and David and Nancy Adkins.
All deacons of Trinity Baptist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers.
