William was the eleventh child of Daniel Allhands and Patience Saddler. He was a farmer and owned Two Hundred and eighty acres of rich farmland in Belmont Township of Iroquois County, Illinois. He married first Catherine Ann Hixon (daughter of James M. and Rosa Hixon). They were married on October 21, 1841 in Montgomery County, Indiana. Four children were born to this union; Erastus James (1842-1886), Seth John (1845-1907) and Mary Catherine (first Frederick Williamson) (second Isaac S. Peddycoart/Peddicort) (1848-1898). There was another child that died in infancy. After Catherine's death in December of 1848 (she died in Montgomery County, Indiana), due to Childbed Fever; William married for a second time. Martha A. Moore; a daughter of Jacob Moore and his wife, Rachel Van Pelt was William's second wife. Their union took place on October 3, 1849 in Montgomery County, Indiana. They had (fourteen according to family Bible records) thirteen known children; six sons and seven daughters. William was a member of the United Brethren Church.
