Ballerina and teacher. Born in Brooklyn she studied at the Professional Children's School, the Metropolitan Opera School of Ballet and with Helene Veola with whom she learnt Spanish Dance and with Fokine. She was one of Balanchine's first students in New York.
While she was a student at the School of American Ballet she was in the original cast of Serenade, Balanchine's first ballet in the United States and one of his most celebrated. She was fifteen.
Boris made her professional debut in the Met Ballet's Carmen in 1935 and was a principal dancer with the company in the late 1930s and 1940s. For a year, 1936-37, she was soloist with Ballet Caravan. She also was a soloist in the musical theater, both in New York and San Francisco, dancing in works by Agnes de Mille. Following her engagement with the Met Ballet, Boris danced with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, where she performed leading roles. In the 1950's with toured in a small group with her husband and was a principal dancer and director of Royal Winnipeg Ballet from 1956-57. She danced in the 1958 revival of "Annie Get Your Gun." Her career as a dancer ended with the development of primary degenerative arthritis in her hip.
Boris choreographed numerous works, the best known being Cakewalk which was premiered in 1951 by City Ballet. She choreographed for various companies, including Dance Theatre of Harlem and First Chamber Dance.
A versatile dancer her career included classical roles in Swan Lake and more modern works such as Frankie and Johnny.
